The complete zipper size chart
Zipper size (#3, #5, #8…) is the approximate width of the closed chain. Here are the standard gauges with widths in mm and inches:
| Size | Width (mm) | Width (in) | Relative strength | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #3 | ~3 mm | ~0.12 in | Light | Dresses, shirts, linings, pockets, light bags |
| #5 | ~5 mm | ~0.20 in | Medium | Jackets, hoodies, mid-weight bags, cushions |
| #7 | ~7 mm | ~0.28 in | Medium-heavy | Heavier jackets, backpacks |
| #8 | ~8 mm | ~0.31 in | Heavy | Parkas, luggage, technical outerwear |
| #10 | ~10 mm | ~0.39 in | Very heavy | Heavy-duty bags, tents, industrial gear |

Zipper sizes in inches
Most of the world specifies zippers in millimetres, but if you work in inches, the conversion is simple: divide the mm width by 25.4. The practical values are #3 ≈ 0.12 in, #5 ≈ 0.20 in, #8 ≈ 0.31 in and #10 ≈ 0.39 in. When ordering, always state the size number (e.g. #5) rather than the inch value — the number is the unambiguous standard worldwide.
Size availability by zipper type
Not every type comes in every size. This chart shows the common, production-ready range for each:
| Type | #3 | #5 | #8 | #10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nylon coil | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Metal | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Resin | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Invisible | ✓ | — | — | — |
| Waterproof | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | — |
Invisible zippers are made in fine #3 only (the whole point is that they disappear into the seam). Waterproof zippers run #3–#8.
Common zipper lengths
Length is separate from size — a #5 can be short or long. These are the lengths most often ordered by application:
| Application | Common length |
|---|---|
| Pockets | 12–18 cm (5–7 in) |
| Dresses & skirts | 35–60 cm (14–24 in) |
| Hoodies & jackets | 60–80 cm (24–32 in) |
| Long coats & parkas | 70–90 cm (28–35 in) |
| Cushions | 40–60 cm (16–24 in) |
| Bags & backpacks | Varies — specify per panel |
For made-to-order runs, give the exact stop-to-stop length. See how to measure a zipper to capture it correctly.
How to use this chart
- Pick the size from the first chart, matching gauge to the load (light → #3, everyday → #5, heavy → #8).
- Confirm the type is available in that size using the availability chart.
- Choose a length from the lengths chart, or measure your sample.

Frequently asked questions
What is a zipper size chart? It maps each zipper size number (#3, #5, #8, #10) to its chain width in millimetres and inches, plus typical uses — so you can pick the right gauge quickly.
What size is a standard zip? #5 is the most common all-round size (about 5 mm wide), used on most jackets, hoodies and mid-weight bags. #3 is standard for light apparel.
What is the zipper size in mm? The size number is roughly the closed chain width in mm: #3 ≈ 3 mm, #5 ≈ 5 mm, #8 ≈ 8 mm, #10 ≈ 10 mm.
How do I convert zipper size to inches? Divide the mm width by 25.4: #3 ≈ 0.12 in, #5 ≈ 0.20 in, #8 ≈ 0.31 in, #10 ≈ 0.39 in. Always order by the size number, not the inch value.
Do all zipper types come in all sizes? No. Invisible zippers are #3 only; waterproof run #3–#8; nylon coil, metal and resin cover #3–#10. See the availability chart above.
