The complete zipper size chart
Zipper size (#3, #5, #8…) is the approximate width of the closed chain. Here are the standard gauges with widths in mm and inches:

Zipper sizes in inches
Most of the world specifies zippers in millimetres, but if you work in inches, the conversion is simple: divide the mm width by 25.4. The practical values are #3 ≈ 0.12 in, #5 ≈ 0.20 in, #8 ≈ 0.31 in and #10 ≈ 0.39 in. When ordering, always state the size number (e.g. #5) rather than the inch value — the number is the unambiguous standard worldwide.

Invisible zippers are made in fine #3 only (the whole point is that they disappear into the seam). Waterproof zippers run #3–#8.

Length is separate from size — a #5 can be short or long. These are the lengths most often ordered by application:
