Types of Zippers Explained: Nylon vs Metal vs Resin vs Invisible vs Waterproof
Choosing a zipper (or “zip”) starts with one decision: which type? Nylon coil, metal, resin, invisible and waterproof zippers look similar at a glance but behave very differently — in strength, weight, feel, cost and the products they suit. This guide compares them side by side so you can pick the right one with confidence, then points you to the right size once the type is settled.
Zipper types at a glance
| Type | Best for | Strength | Feel | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nylon coil | Everyday apparel | Medium | Soft, flexible | Low |
| Metal | Denim, leather, bags | High | Rugged, premium | High |
| Resin (moulded) | Outdoor, cold weather | High | Bold, light | Medium |

Nylon coil zippers
The most common type in apparel. A continuous monofilament coil is sewn to the tape, making nylon coil zippers light, flexible and self-healing after minor snags. They lie flat, run quietly and take Pantone colour matching beautifully — the volume choice for t-shirts, dresses, light jackets and soft bags. Choose nylon coil when flexibility and cost matter more than a rugged look.
Metal zippers
The original and still the most premium-feeling. Metal zippers use individual teeth stamped from brass, aluminium or gunmetal, giving high strength and a tactile, high-end quality. They are the default for denim, leather jackets, premium bags and boots. The trade-offs: heavier, pricier, and less flexible than coil. Finishes are plated in-house and salt-spray tested so the colour survives years of wear.
Metal vs nylon zipper: the short version
This is the most common comparison buyers ask. Metal = strongest feel, premium look, heavier and dearer — best for denim, leather and bags. Nylon coil = lighter, more flexible, cheaper and quieter — best for everyday apparel. If the garment is casual and high-volume, nylon; if it is premium or rugged, metal.
Resin (moulded) zippers
Resin zippers — sometimes called Vislon-style — have teeth injection-moulded directly onto the tape. Resin zippers deliver bold, sculpted teeth in vivid colour, stay flexible in the cold and never rust, which is why they dominate ski wear, parkas, backpacks and technical outdoor gear. They are lighter than metal but just as strong in the larger gauges.
Invisible zippers
Invisible zippers hide the coil behind the tape so only the stitch line shows. The result is a seamless, tailored finish that disappears into dresses, skirts, formalwear and cushions. They are made in fine #3 only, with a smooth low-profile slider that glides without catching delicate fabric. Choose invisible when the closure should not be seen at all.
Waterproof zippers
Waterproof zippers are built around a TPU-laminated tape that seals against water and dust, rated to IPX5. Reverse-coil construction keeps the teeth protected, and the film holds its seal past 5,000+ cycles. They are the right (and only honest) choice for rainwear, outdoor shells, camera bags and medical garments. For the full technical detail, see our waterproof zipper guide.
Reflective and custom options
Beyond the five core types, reflective zippers integrate a retro-reflective tape for 360° night visibility (EN ISO 20471-compatible) — ideal for safety wear, workwear and cycling. And any type can be built to order: custom zippers let you control tape, teeth, slider, branded pull and packaging.
How to choose the right zipper type
Work down this short list:
- Everyday apparel, soft and high-volume? → Nylon coil.
- Premium, rugged, denim/leather/bags? → Metal.
- Outdoor, cold weather, bold colour? → Resin.
- Must be invisible (dresses, formalwear)? → Invisible.
- Must keep water out? → Waterproof.
- Needs night visibility? → Reflective.
Type and size go together
Type is only half the spec — the other half is size (#3, #5, #8…), which sets strength and proportion. A #5 metal and a #5 nylon coil are the same nominal width but feel completely different. The bottom line
Pick the type for the job: nylon coil for everyday apparel, metal for premium and rugged goods, resin for outdoor, invisible for clean tailoring, waterproof for wet conditions, and reflective for safety. Then match the size to the load. Get type and size right together and the closure becomes a feature, not a failure point.

Frequently asked questions
What are the main types of zippers? The five core types are nylon coil, metal, resin (moulded), invisible and waterproof. Reflective and fully custom zippers are also widely used.
What is the difference between a metal and a nylon zipper? Metal zippers have individual stamped teeth — strongest feel, premium look, heavier and pricier. Nylon coil zippers use a sewn coil — lighter, more flexible, cheaper and quieter. Metal suits denim and bags; nylon suits everyday apparel.
Which type of zipper is strongest? Metal and large-gauge resin zippers are the strongest. For the same look at lower weight, resin (#8–#10) is a strong choice; for a premium feel, metal.
What type of zipper is best for outdoor gear? Resin for cold-weather flexibility and vivid colour, and waterproof (TPU-laminated, IPX5) when keeping water out is essential.
Which zipper type is invisible? Invisible (concealed) zippers hide the coil behind the tape so only the seam shows — used for dresses, skirts and formalwear, made in fine #3.
